Frequently asked questions

  • What is the background to the initiative?

The NHS is the largest employer in Britain and offers over 350 careers to choose from but starting your career can be a challenge, especially if you do not come from a background that has strong connections with health professionals. In addition many young people struggle to gain relevant work experience in the health sector due to limited number of placements on offer and age restrictions. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had further negative impact on available opportunities with many outreach programmes put on hold. This platform has been developed to give young people a valuable insight into the work our heroes do to achieve the best patient outcomes.

  • Who is the platform for?

The platform has been designed for young people aged 14 and over who are interested in learning about different careers available in the health sector, university entry requirements, key skills required for those careers and challenges they may face in their chosen profession.

  • How is the content delivered?

Most of the content is delivered through presentations and videos. Our interactive courses also include quizzes and interactive tasks.

  • Does ‘virtual’ work experience replace face-to-face experience?

Our courses have been developed to give young people an insight into NHS careers and to help them make informed choices about their future career. Face-to-face experience can give you a greater insight into finding out about what it is like to work in healthcare but this is not a requirement when applying for most health related degrees. For those applying to medical schools, clinical work experience is generally not a requirement and many medical schools have updated their entry requirements in recent years but please check the Medical Schools Council or university websites for current guidance. You can talk about any type of experience in your personal statement as long as you can also talk about the things you have learnt about medicine as a profession, reflect on what you have learnt about yourself and other people and about how effective care is delivered and received.

  • Am I required to view all resources?

No. You can explore the careers that interest you or view a range of resources to get a greater understanding of what it is like to work in the health sector and how multi-disciplinary teams work together to deliver patient care. Each completed course from the Interactive Courses category will generate a new certificate of completion as a reward for your accomplishment.

  • Are all of the resources free of charge?

Yes, all the resources on the platform are free of charge.

  • What if I have additional questions not already answered in this section?

For all questions relating to the platform, please email us via [email protected] or click the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page to contact our team.
